At First Step Housing, we are dedicated to providing supported housing for individuals struggling with addiction issues. Our mission is to empower residents on their journey to recovery through a safe and nurturing environment.
Through monthly meetings with our support team, clents will be supported as they address problem areas in their lives. These areas will be identified using the 'Health & Well-being Prism' developed by 'The Primary Care Network'.
With support staff, actions plans will be discussed and implemented and will be further supported by other agencies that the client will be 'sign-posted' to.
The most effective way to gain empowerment is through employment as this gives people more control over their own lives.
A phased approach will be adopted towards emplopyment beginning with mentoring and moving on to volunteering then part-time and eventually full-time employment. These activities will be further supported by other agaencies such as 'Second Step', 'JobCentre Plus' etc.
If by the beginning of year 3 clients have not been able to move on to independent accommodation they will be further supported in finding such housing.
It should be noted that tenancy agreements made with our clients are for a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 3 years.
Basic entry criteria are single persons, who require support with their recovery, preferably over the age of 30, who are on benefits (Universal Credit or PIP).
We are also in the situation, when there is availability, to take using alcoholics into our H.M.O.s (House of Multiple Occupancy) with the prospect of engaging with the local agency - 'With You' for De-Tox and stabilisation prior to entry into one of our Dry Houses.
All of our team members are in recovery, which means that we have a deeper understanding of the issues involved in the recovery process.
First Step Housing also works closely with other agencies such as 'Somewhere to Go', 'The Salvation Army', 'Food Bank', the 'Welfare Provision Scheme', 'With You', 'The Hub' (Education & Holistic Training) and other charitable organisations.
